The name Karkala has been derived from the Kannada word "kari kallu", meaning black stones. Karkala is important pilgrim centre for Jains. The towering 41.5 ft. granite monolith of Bahubali - also known as Gommateshwara - is built on an elevated platform on top of a rocky hill, known locally as Gommata Betta. It was installed in the year 1432. The Maha Mastakabhisheka is held here once in 12 years. There are about 18 Jain Basadis here. The Chaturmukha Bias is the important one.
